The Nuestra Familia Award is the San Diego La Raza Lawyers Association’s yearly award for a non-attorney who makes a difference in the community. On October 16, 2026, Charles Oreve, founder of The X Concept, received the Nuestra Familia Award at the SDLRLA Scholarship Fund Annual Dinner & Gala. Hector Tamayo, the association’s outgoing president, presented the award.
What is the Nuestra Familia Award?
The San Diego La Raza Lawyers Association presents several awards every year. Most honor attorneys and judges. The Nuestra Familia Award is different: it goes to someone outside the legal profession whose work has made a real difference for the association and the community it serves. “Nuestra familia” means “our family” in Spanish, and the name says what the award is about: welcoming a non-attorney into the SDLRLA family.

Charles Oreve receives the 2026 Nuestra Familia Award
Charles Oreve received the 2026 Nuestra Familia Award on Friday, October 16, 2026, at the gala, held at the Gaylord Pacific Resort & Convention Center. Hector Tamayo, the outgoing president of SDLRLA, presented the award in front of judges, attorneys, elected officials and community leaders.
Two other honorees were recognized the same evening. Agustin Pena received the Service to La Raza Award, and Leah Gonzales received the President’s Award.
“Working with La Raza Lawyers has shown me how much this community gives to the next generation of lawyers. Being welcomed as part of nuestra familia means more to me than any project I have delivered.” – Charles Oreve, founder of The X Concept
Why a web agency founder received the Nuestra Familia Award
Charles Oreve began working with SDLRLA in 2025, when Hector Tamayo asked The X Concept to build the website for the association’s golf tournament. That first project grew into a broader partnership. The X Concept has since built four websites for SDLRLA:
- The golf tournament website, which supports one of the association’s fundraising events.
- The main SDLRLA website, the association’s home for members, events and news.
- The Judiciary Reception website, for the association’s reception honoring members of the judiciary.
- The SDLRLA Scholarship Fund website, where law students apply for scholarships and bar stipends and supporters donate, sponsor the gala and buy gala tickets.
For Charles Oreve, the work has always been about more than code. SDLRLA’s mission of giving a voice to the Latino legal community is one he believes in, and helping the association reach more members, sponsors and students is a way to support it. The Nuestra Familia Award recognizes that contribution from someone who is not an attorney but has become part of the community.
About the SDLRLA Scholarship Fund Gala
The gala is the SDLRLA Scholarship Fund’s signature fundraiser. According to the SDLRLA Scholarship Fund’s gala announcement, the evening draws hundreds of judges, attorneys, elected city, state and federal officials, and community leaders.
Proceeds go to two programs run by the SDLRLA Scholarship Fund:
- Law student scholarships, typically $1,000 to $5,000, for second- and third-year law students with ties to San Diego or Imperial Counties.
- Bar stipends, typically $500 to $2,000, for final-year students preparing for the California Bar Examination.
Since 2007, the SDLRLA Scholarship Fund has awarded more than $650,000. Students of any background who have contributed to the Latino or Spanish-speaking community can apply.
How to support the SDLRLA Scholarship Fund
Anyone can help the next class of scholarship recipients. The SDLRLA Scholarship Fund accepts tax-deductible donations of any amount, offers gala sponsorships for firms and families, and welcomes volunteers who can lend their time and professional skills.
If your bar association, nonprofit or law firm needs a website that helps it reach members, sponsors and donors, The X Concept builds and maintains WordPress websites for legal organizations across the country.
